It certainly wasn&#8217;t an easy decision, but we have managed to support six different projects\u00a0\u2013 the most we&#8217;ve supported in a single year \u2013 with a total of \u00a322,000. Rebuilt by William Marshall, one of the most famous knight of his age, the castle was also the birthplace of Henry VII.\u00a0Neil Ludlow and James Meek&#8217;s project will excavate in the outer ward to find out more about a late medieval hall. We also funded a geophysical survey at the castle <a href=\"http:\/\/castlestudiestrust.org\/Pembroke-Castle.html\">in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/castlestudiestrust.org\/Dig-It.html\">Dig It!, castles of southern Scotland<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/castlestudiestrust.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/digit-2017-logo-150px.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-516 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/castlestudiestrust.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/digit-2017-logo-150px.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With funding from the Castle Studies Trust Dig It! will be producing a series of eight videos exploring castles in southern Scotland, and sharing them with an online audience. By making it easier to access information about these important historic sites through YouTube and Wikipedia the project aims to inspire the next generation of castle enthusiasts!<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/castlestudiestrust.org\/Keith-Marischal.html\">Keith Marischal, East Lothian, Scotland<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d1841.2090529017719!2d-2.8827623865089222!3d55.86972387241884!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x0%3A0x0!2zNTXCsDUyJzExLjAiTiAywrA1Mic1NS4wIlc!5e1!3m2!1sen!2suk!4v1520611738509\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nThe Castle of Keith belonged to the powerful Keith family. The castle has since been demolished, with some parts built into Keith Marischal House which now stands on the site.\u00a0Miles Kerr-Peterson and and Rose Geophysical Consultants will be carrying out a geophysical survey to search for the castle&#8217;s lost tower and great hall.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/castlestudiestrust.org\/Laughton-en-le-Morthen.html\">Laughton-en-le-Morthen, South Yorkshire, England<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1520613508962!6m8!1m7!1sokPePG_4ORE298MZnGx6bg!2m2!1d53.38759522328585!2d-1.225060443392339!3f340.4736057141214!4f-4.270112250601883!5f1.8691723817104786\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nThe castle is undocumented in medieval sources, but the earthworks of the motte-and-bailey castle are impressive: the motte itself is 9m tall. To help with this, Chris Jones-Jenkins will create a digital reconstruction of Ruthin. Chris also worked on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Wv_sHru_OG0\">reconstruction of Holt Castle<\/a>, which was built around the same time some 18 miles to the east.<\/p>\n<h3>Stay in touch!<\/h3>\n<p>We will have updates from these projects throughout the year.
