Photogrammetic and geophysical survey at Laugthon-en-le-Morthen Castle

Sum awarded: £1,900

Duncan Wright and Aerial-Cam will carry out aerial photographic and geophysical surveys to create a picture of the castle’s current remains and its position in the landscape.

Very little is known about the castle’s history, but it may have been added to an Anglo-Saxon enclosure. The earthworks are very well preserved, with a 9m tall motte surrounded by a kidney-shaped enclosure. Using research methodology recently applied to investigating castles of the civil war between Stephen and Matilda, this project aims to establish more about the site’s development and how it relates to the surrounding area.
