Lowther Castle, Cumbria

Sum awarded: £7,038

Lowther Castle is a ringwork in Cumbria that is starting to reveal its secrets. The early history of the castle is uncertain, but it may have been founded soon after the region was conquered by the Normans, along with the neighbouring village which has been long since abandoned.

In 2023, Dr. Sophie Ambler led the first geophysical surveys and excavations at the site. This year the team return to Lowther searching for answers. The excavations will explore the possible location of the gatehouse – the all important entrance to the castle – and look for the remains of buildings enclosed by the rampart around the site.
