Newhouse, Lincolnshire

Sum awarded: £9,867

Newhouse Castle was built by Peter of Goxhill during the civil war between Stephen and Matilda, often referred to as ‘the Anarchy’. The castle seemed to have a short-lived existence and was later replaced by an abbey. Investigating Newhouse will help understand how the lower echelons of the medieval gentry expressed their power and status through castles.

On the surface, Newhouse is a fairly typical ‘Anarchy’ castle as nothing survives above ground, but a geophysical survey in 2022 hinted that buried archaeology survives. Project lead Ryan Prescott and Humberfield Archaeology will open two trenches at the castle, covering an area of 120m2. The aim is to investigate the features identified through the geophysical survey.
