The striking red sandstone fortress of Penrith Castle was established in the closing years of the 14th century. It was built for the Neville family before it was given to the Duke of Gloucester on the death of Richard Neville. The duke was crowned Richard III in 1483, and the castle became a Crown possession.

The grant will enable to creation of a reconstruction drawing of the castle as it may have appeared in 15th century, supplementing existing aerial reconstructions with one that helps visitors orient themselves on the site, and conveys the daily life at the castle. Peter Urmston will work on the reconstruction, with project lead Dr. Will Wyeth providing the research.

The castle is a free-to-visit site under the care of English Heritage.
